All together, the team tallies over 210 years of experience. “We all get along,” said salesman Rich Crawford. “We have a lot of repeat customers.” Originally, the elder Hank opened his store near Easterday Avenue before moving to the corner of Three Mile Road and M-129. Prior to Hank’s ownership, there was a dairy farm at the present day location. The current store’s floor space has been heavily influenced by its past life as a showroom for Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth and Jeep vehicles. For just over 30 years starting in1978, Chippewa Motors was a Mopar dealership. There have been other brands the store has represented as well such as Artic Cat and Suzuki. But the one constant has always been Yamaha. “We are the oldest continuously operating Yamaha snowmobile dealership in the United States,” said sales manager Steve Lawson. “Meaning that Walt took it when Yamaha snowmobiles first came out, and he’s been the sole owner of the business for that amount of time — 50 years.” The staff at Chippewa Motors also prides itself with its involvement in the EUP’s snowmobile community. The group is a supporter of the Sault Ste. Marie and Les Cheneaux Snowmobile Associations, and has had some of its products featured in the I-500 over the years. Members also volunteer to help groom snowmobile trails and keep them accessible year round for other off-road vehicle uses. Outside of selling vehicles, the business offers award winning repairs and services. There’s also a ton of powersports-related apparel on display throughout the display floor.
