Typically, Brown said, the mix-bred Alaskans serve as better runners and thrive when the thermometer dips below zero degrees. “We’re expecting it to be pretty chilly. Race day temperatures should be around minus-five and five-above,” Brown forecast. “It’s actually pretty ideal for the dogs. It’s a little inconvenient for mushers and spectators. They’re just going to need layers.” Staff members from the TCSDR have been tediously grooming the special one-day only trail around the park. Brown mentioned that the state park serves as a great venue for accommodating the trail, and the teams only briefly cross the dedicated snowmobile trails. The start and finish lines of all the races will take place at the Day Use area at the state park. If a dedicated spectator arrives early enough, they can see the hundreds of dogs start and finish their marathon runs. “It’s a fun, one day race event,” said Brown. “We’ll have 600 dogs in the parking lot, and people come meet them and the mushers.” By having five classes, the TCSDR is able to have mushers and dogs of all ages and experience levels compete. The 10-dog pro circuit is approximately 51 miles, the eight dog pro class is 41 miles, the six dog sportsman is 30 miles and the four dog sportsman is 16 miles. The fifth class, one of Brown’s favorites, is the two to three dog youth class. The youngsters race just four miles, but get a great amount of experience.
